What's the difference between hardwood and softwood?
Hardwoods are a broad category of slow-growing trees that produce dense wood. Hardwood trees are usually identified by their seasonal qualities; they tend to drop leaves in autumn and sprout new ones in spring.
Hardwoods that we typically use include ash, oak and birch. With most hardwood, the density of the wood means it produces more heat and burns a lot longer than softwood.
Softwoods are less dense than hardwoods and are usually evergreens or cone-producing trees. Softwoods grow much faster and are easier to get ahold of than hardwoods, therefore they’re cheaper.
The most common softwoods for burning include pine, fir and cedar.
General Uses
Choosing which type of wood to go for depends on your budget, preferences and how long you want to burn it. There are advantages and disadvantages to both:
Hardwood
- Burns longer
- Doesn't create a lot of smoke
- Generates more heat
Softwood
- Produces aesthetically pleasing embers
- Quick to light
- More affordable
